From Northern Ireland…

For flights, Birmingham Airport is the closest & has a rail connection straight from the airport. Or there is plenty of car hire options at the airport. Ryanair & Aerlingus fly out of Dublin, or Easyjet from Belfast International.

The quickest ferry crossing is Dublin-Holyhead. Both Stenaline & Irish Ferries run on this route. If going as a foot passenger, you can catch the train straight from Holyhead port (there are good prices for “rail and sail” tickets available online at trainline).

If you are taking the car over, the fastest route from Holyhead is roughly 3hrs along the main roads via Conway. However, if you are making a trip of it, and looking for the most scenic route, we highly recommend you travel through Snowdonia National Park. The two mountain pass roads (either A5 via Bethesda or A4086 via Llanberis) take you right up into the heart of Snowdonia’s tallest mountains. Or alternatively, you can take the longer route (A487) which skirts around the western side of Snowdonia’s mountains, hugging the coastline with plenty of scenic stops along the way.

Caernarfon & Harlech are home to two of Wales’s most iconic castles, only a short detour from the main road (A487). Coed y Brenin forest park & the historic town of Dolgellau make for a good mid-way break as well if taking this longer route.
